Pacifiers: To Use or Not to Use...That is the Question!
Absolutely use one! I think that most little baby boys need something to help them calm down when they get in their panic mode and it's easier to wean them off sucking a pacifier than weaning them off sucking their thumbs or fingers. Pack a pacifier or two to take with you to the hospital! You'll want one that has a slot to be able to thread a pacifier clip through so that once Little Baby Boy (LBB) spits it out, it won't drop onto the floor. I know that LBB probably won't want to suck on the thing at first, but you just keep shoving it in his little mouth until he gets used to it. You'll thank me later.
For those of you who are balking about using the pacifier because you don't want to have to go through the trauma of getting LBB to quit the habit...a very effective means of getting rid of the thing follows:
How to Get Little Baby Boy to Give Up His Pacifier:
When you are ready for LBB to give up his Binky, and you'll know when its time, take the thing when he has dropped it and shows little interest in it (I did this when my very own LBB was soundly sleeping) and clip just a little bit off of the end of the nipple of the pacifier. IF LBB still sucks on the thing, let him keep it, then after a couple of days, take the pacifier and clip off a little more. Keep doing this until there is nothing left to the nipple and just see if LBB doesn't throw it down to never pick it up again! His choice, and he doesn't blame you! When I did this with my very own LBB, he put the thing in his mouth after the first clip, took a couple of sucks on it, pulled it out of his mouth, gave it a really perplexed look, and threw it down never to look back.
